Your hobbies are a huge part of your life. Why not preserve the memory of your hobbies in a photo shoot!? One of my favorite photo shoots for senior portraits came about because a senior boy told me he wanted to showcase his western wear and truck in his portraits.
I instantly thought this was an intriguing idea mostly because I could hear the authenticity in his voice. I look at most of my photo sessions as collaborations and this session was definitely that! We captured many poses in three venues nearby each other while we chased the light.
It happened again at the end of the summer when a girl did the same thing! She chose western wear (cowboy hat, jeans, boots, checkered shirt) in addition to a glamorous gown to show two sides of herself. It’s a great idea that definitely adds variety to your photo gallery! Cowboy hats or any hats and props help the senior have something to work with, touch, secure their hair in place and balance out the entire image of the photograph.

When a whole family gets into it by showcasing a hobby, it takes on a bit of theater and I loved it! A family of five dressed up in Steampunk attire –the infant, preschooler, elementary school child and parents were decked out from head to toe in the whimsical Steampunk attire, accessories, and props.
They brought the drama, attitude, whimsy, and poured it all into the feeling of the moment . It was more than a photo shoot for holiday cards—it was an EXPERIENCE. I definitely recommend that families consider themes for their holiday cards. I’m talking about Scout families, Eagle Scouts, hobbies, wearing their favorite team jerseys, dressing up as a favorite band, etc.–whatever it is that brings families together.
Put some imagination into it…..you will probably end up with a list of ideas! Let’s collaborate!
